The University of Sydney Institute for Sustainable Solutions

The Institute for Sustainable Solutions provides a focal point for outstanding sustainability research and extends existing University-wide research strengths in order to contribute to, and where appropriate lead, global solutions to sustainability issues.

USISS is conceptualised under four distinct but related categories:

• Health - protecting physical, mental and social health led by A/Professor Ruth Colagiuri
• Energy - alternatives, emissions and management led by Professor Tony Vassallo
• Environment - land, water and air led by Professor John Crawford
• Development - security, economics, law, politics and planning led by Dr Geoff Frost and Dr Michael Paton

The specific goals of USISS are to:

• Improve research performance, impact and knowledge transfer, particularly cross-disciplinary research focused on sustainability solutions
• Develop research training in sustainability
• Grow the profile of the University in sustainability research by engaging in public policy debate and formation, public engagement and community outreach
• Develop industry and government linkages
• Better coordinate both research and teaching across the University

The Institute for Sustainable Solutions was launched in July 2008 in association with a public lecture by Columbia University’s world renowned macroeconomist Jeffrey Sachs, a series of overview presentations by the USISS theme leaders, and a spirited debate on sustainability, adjudicated by media personality Adam Spencer.
