Emerging Health Policy Research Conference

 

13th October 2006

The conference showcased the work in progress of current doctoral and post-doctoral researchers working in all areas of health policy.

Mr Robert Wells, Co-Director, Menzies Centre for Health Policy opened the conference and welcomed guests.

Ms Julia Gillard MP, then Shadow Minister for Health, delivered the keynote address: Evidence Based Health Policy.

Following Ms Gillard’s presentation the following plenary sessions were conducted:

  • Issues in Indigenous Health
  • Contentious Issues in Health Policy
  • Health Service Delivery & Mental Health
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Technology & Health Policy
  • Health Economics
  • Policy Processes & Reform
  • Health Policy: Evidence & Evaluation

Following the plenary sessions, Associate Professor Russell Gruen, EPOC Editor, Cochrane EPOC Satellite delivered a presentation entitled Cochrane Effective Practice & Organisation of Care Satellite: contributing to evidence-based health policy making in Australia.

Dr Cathy Mead, Managing Editor, Australia & New Zealand Health Policy addressed the audience with a presentation entitled Publishing: How, Where and Why.

New Models of Primary Prevention: How well do they translate into action?

This seminar was the third and final in a series of 3 Oxford Health Alliance Seminars (OxHA).

Speakers:

  • Professor Boyd Swinburn, Chair in Population Health, School of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences, Deakin University. Professor Swinburn's presentation was entitled Experiences from Obesity Prevention.
  • Emeritus Professor Stewart Truswell AO, Chairman, Nutrition Research Foundation, University of Sydney. Professor Truswell's presentation was entitled The Contribution of Pharmaceutical Products.

Discussants:

  • Professor Ian Caterson, Boden Professor of Human Nutrition at the University of Sydney
  • Mr Ross O’Donoughue, Director, Health Improvement, ACT Health, joined the seminar as discussants.

Dr Rob Moodie, Chief Executive Officer, VicHealth (Victorian Health Promotion Foundation) chaired the seminar.

The Menzies Centre for Health Policy was opened by His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC, then Governor General & patron of the Menzies Foundation, on Friday 3 March 2006 at Old Parliament House.

Following the official opening, Mr Andrew Podger AO gave the inaugural Menzies Centre for Health Policy Oration entitled A Model Health System for Australia.
