The conference showcased the work in progress of current doctoral and post-doctoral researchers working in all areas of health policy.
Mr Robert Wells, Co-Director, Menzies Centre for Health Policy opened the conference and welcomed guests.
Ms Julia Gillard MP, then Shadow Minister for Health, delivered the keynote address: Evidence Based Health Policy.
Following Ms Gillard’s presentation the following plenary sessions were conducted:

- Contentious Issues in Health Policy
- Health Service Delivery & Mental Health
- HIV/AIDS
- Technology & Health Policy
- Health Economics
- Policy Processes & Reform

Dr Cathy Mead, Managing Editor, Australia & New Zealand Health Policy addressed the audience with a presentation entitled Publishing: How, Where and Why.

These three lectures encouraged reflection on the degree to which existing health and health care policies take account of the new needs of an older population, one in which the technology of care continues to blossom and costs of care increase.

This seminar was the first in a series of 3 Oxford Health Alliance Seminars (OxHA). The Australian Health Policy Institute (AHPI) recently joined the academic network of the Oxford Health Alliance. AHPI agreed to foster and undertake activities to promote action and to assist success in the 'race against time' to combat chronic diseases globally. This seminar series is one of those activities.

Menzies Centre for Health Policy Public Health Oration
The Menzies Centre for Health Policy was opened by His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC, then Governor General & patron of the Menzies Foundation, on Friday 3 March 2006 at Old Parliament House.
Following the official opening, Mr Andrew Podger AO gave the inaugural Menzies Centre for Health Policy Oration entitled A Model Health System for Australia.
